Jakob Juhkam

A blend of rock and jazz rhythms, minimalist soundscapes, and electronic textures

Jakob Juhkam is a Tallinn-based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Originally from Häädemeeste, he studied composition at the Tallinn Music High School and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, developing a musical language that blends rock and jazz rhythms, minimalist soundscapes, and electronic textures.

Over the past 11 years, Jakob has primarily composed for theatre, where he has also worked extensively as a sound designer. His professional career began at Theatre NO99, and he has since created music and sound design for more than 40 productions. Internationally, he has collaborated with directors Tiit Ojasoo and Ene-Liis Semper at venues including Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Burgtheater in Vienna, and Luzerner Theater.

Although theatre has shaped much of his artistic practice, he’s alwasy been passionate about cinema. His approach to composition is driven by a desire to understand what the story seeks to evoke beneath the surface. Rather than composing from a single emotional angle, he explores how music can open multiple atmospheres, tensions, and emotional perspectives simultaneously.

Jakob works mainly as a solo multi-instrumentalist, recording real instruments in natural acoustic environments whenever possible. Alongside this organic approach, he is experienced in working with DAWs, MIDI, and sound design, and has formal training in orchestration and score writing. His years in theatre have also given him extensive experience collaborating with musicians, actors, and singers, making collective creation an important part of his process in addition to studio-based work.

Beyond composing for stage and screen, Jakob is an active performer and recording artist. He has played keyboards in bands including Vaiko Eplik ja Eliit and Malcolm Lincoln. To date, he has released 12 albums, including his solo records T (2012), HH (2014), and the double album L (2022).
